The European Master’s in Translation Network Meeting at ILS UW on 2-3 June 2025

Since 2014, the Institute of Applied Linguistics has been a member of the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) network, which has been established by the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) at the European Commission and brings together the best translation programmes in Europe. On June 2-3, ILS co-organized a meeting of EMT network members in Warsaw together with the European Commission. The conference was held under the patronage of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU. This prestigious event, which took place in Poland for the first time, was attended by representatives of 81 EMT-accredited translation programmes.

The opening ceremony was attended by: Director General of the DGT Christos Ellinides, Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, Undersecretary of State for European Affairs at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Vice-Rector of the University of Warsaw for Student Affairs and Quality of Learning and Teaching Prof. Maciej Raś, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Linguistics Prof. Agnieszka Andrychowicz-Trojanowska, and Director of the Institute of Applied Linguistics Prof. Agnieszka Biernacka.

The EMT conference comprised of a colloquium ‘Translating Poland’ (2 June) and a meeting of the EMT network (3 June). The colloquium ‘Translating Poland’ showcased ILS’s three fundamental pillars of translation research with presentations by our staff and guests:

  • Audiovisual Translation and Accessibility: Prof. Agnieszka Szarkowska, Dr Wojciech Figiel, Sonia Szkriba, Gabriela Flis, Dr Szczygielska, Krzysztof Krawczyk
  • Institutional Translation, Terminology, Clear Language: Prof. Łucja Biel, Prof. Tomasz Piekot, Dr Karolina Stefaniak, Sebastian Kondracki
  • Literary Translation: Prof. Małgorzata Gaszyńska-Magiera, Prof. Markus Eberharter, Prof. Elżbieta Tabakowska, Prof. Wojciech Charchalis, Aleksandra Połeć and Zofia Bartuzi

The second day of the conference, entitled Empowering Translation with Technology and Training, comprised discussions on translator training in the age of artificial intelligence, exchange of good practices and presentations of EMT working groups’ activities. The speakers included representatives of the EMT programmes, experts from the EMT-LIND group and DGT staff.
